Batteries

Original M200 battery was 4400 mAh Replacement: 4700 mAh

US part number PA3191U-4BRS Canadian part number PA3191U-4BAS

Do a search on the web for either part number above and you will find dozens of aftermarket (non Toshiba) sources for example (illustration not endorsement): http://www.laptop-battery.org/TOSHIBA/6000.htm

That battery that came with the M200 shares the same shape and basic characteristics as the batteries for many other Toshiba models. The aftermarket replacements will vary from 4000mAh to 4700mAh so read the fine print. When I went looking - I could not find 4700mAh battery except from Toshiba. Part Number PA3191U-5BRS

  • Hint: If your external optical drive is not booting properly try connecting to the USB port closest to the power plug. If that does not work, try first with the USB port farther away, and if it fails move the connection to the one closer to the power plug and then retry.[1]

Keyboard Replacement

Tip for those installing a replacement regarding the "port" where the cable is attached.[2]

The two black things at the edges needs to be nudged down (toward you) Then all you have to do is slightly pull the cable. After that, you can slide the new cable in and push the black sliders up so it locks.

Tools for Diagnosing & Controlling Processess

This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.

  • Process Explorer
Ever wondered which program has a particular file or directory open? Now you can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.
The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you'll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you'll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded.

Relatively narrow: This is one of the oft-cited concerns about this machine. In late 2005 there was an update and a screen with wide-angle viewing was introduced.

Video Drivers

Excerpt from NVIDIA Thread on Tablet PC Buzz contributor: awgneo

  1. Go to http://laptopvideo2go.com
  2. Download any driver you want (some more stable than others).
  3. Get their INF file, find all occurrences of "RotateFlag" and change the value to 0x40 (instead of 0 or 4).
  4. Make sure you have the latest Toshiba Rotation Utility.
  5. Install driver manually via Device Manager in Windows.
  6. Have fun!

Video Memory

Graphics Memory : 32MB

Video Connectivity

Standard VGA connection (standard connection for external monitors or projectors).

Minor concern: Not unique to this machine, but a minor annoyance: When rotating the screen to secondary landscape the output at the VGA port is sent "upside down". This can be a problem when using the machine in secondary landscape mode during a presentation. The workaround is to rotate the machine. The issue is then, that the cables are coming out towards you.

Wrong Machine

You get a "wrong machine" error when rebooting from the recovery media. There is a DMI update for this. http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=1008299&moid=519122&BV_EngineID=cccjaddfgemmedhcgfkceghdgngdgnn.0&ct=DL
